Introducing: Henry Spaggetti

Some new sounds from Brisbane!

It's hard to nail this 16 yr-old down to one single electronic genre. He's having a dig at disco, trap, big room, progressive.. which is a testament to his creative ability. I hear some Clockwork/Knife Party in my favourite track "Out With The Archives"... very promising stuff! His instrumental "Challenge Accepted" is light and dreamy with a balanced bassy, dark tinge. See some of his work below!

For more be sure to check him out on https://soundcloud.com/henry-spaggetti

Big Sean- Hall of Fame (Album Feature)

Haven't featured an album in while! I popped Big Sean's latest album into my car before a gig a couple weeks back and unfortunately due to this "second-release-syndrome" trend around at the moment I didn't set expectations high. This is Sean's second major label release... and major label releases these days are the equivalent of climbing everest in the rap game. Artists now more than ever have to consider strict sample clearing, pressures of a breakthrough lead single, and impossible deadlines. Not to mention record labels squeezing every creative ounce out of tracks to conform into a oh-so-fatiging pop sound. Ironically we blame that on hiphop making major routes into the pop world... isn't that we have wanted all along? More people appreciating rap music?

Big Sean released a mixtape called DETROIT this year. It has been downloaded close to 2 MILLION times. There aren't that many artists in ANY other genre that have sold their body of work 2 million times this year.

It is rare to see a rapper with mixtape numbers like that featuring on pop songs (Jesse J, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Kelly Rowland etc). So not only has he established himself through Kanye and G.O.O.D Music but he's making bank in the pop game. Don't hate, he's just a great businessman!

Hall of Fame reminds me of Common's last album "The Dreamer, The Believer"... he keeps things pretty simple enlisting his in-house producers Key Wane and No I.D. for most of the instrumentals. Things just feel fluid, effortless, and calculated. It has a balance of hiphop, PBRnB (look that up..), and that humour/street/rap he's become famous for. No major label intimidation... he's just doing his thing alongside some great songwriters- Mike Posner, Elijah Blake, Melanie Fiona, Nicole Lequerica... and James Fauntleroy. My oh my what a career that man is going to have. After co-writing Justin Timberlake's "20-20 Experience", James Fauntleroy is back, this time lending Big Sean vocals for 6 or 7 tracks. Everytime his voice features he lifts songs from a simple hiphop track to this adult-contemporary feel that was plastered all over Common's "The Dreamer, The Believer". I honestly believe Fauntleroy carries this album all the way through until the final track. A credit to Sean to allowing space and having a selfless creative process, to canvas such a great album.

Hopefully this urges you to check Hall of Fame out, and make your own judgement. It is a great album, and makes me very happy to know that popular hiphop hasn't completely lost its marbles.

INTRODUCING: Benjamin Brown

Residing from the quaint, yet enterprising grounds of Brisbane, there ain't a flow as rapid and effortless... as Benjamin The Ape. While we all as teens spent our afternoons doing nothing constructive what-so-ever, Ben spent these monotonous years crafting a skill we now all envy- making fat beats. His unique delivery sets him far apart from the majority of emcees in Australia, and thankfully we don't have to wait too much longer to feast into his debut effort- FuturElectric.

All tracks on his forthcoming release are produced by the Ape himself, and feature a handful of eager and upcoming artists from such as Raph, MayaIsDope, and KaeDee. So wake from your slumber, and quit sleeping on DYNU's latest iTunes-play-count-topper.

Pusha-T - WRATH OF CAINE (Mixtape)

We're a few months away from Pusha's latest solo album 'My Name Is My Name', which is without a doubt one of 2013's most anticipated albums. Him and Kanye are cooking up some serious shit. I regard Pusha as one of the most self-sufficient artists in the game right now- he may be under G.O.O.D. Music but the man doesn't need any help. Blocka is a large enough song to release completely on its fucking own... that track 10 times in a row wouldn't grow old...

People forget he's been around since early 2000's- Clipse/The Neptunes used to be fresh to death. He has a track presence these days that's very 'A-List' in the rap game... people just listen cause it's him. So I guess it's hard to completely fuck it up.

Wrath Of Caine is exactly what street music should sound like- Push always has that sophisticated stature that sets him apart from any other trap rappers. No amateur efforts here... Chief Keef- take notes. Production is polished enough for a major label release, all tracks are tight. The right number of tracks aswell- it doesn't drag on. So pop this into your car and feel the Wrath Of Caine...

STANDOUT TRACKS

Only You Can Tell It (Feat. Wale) [Prod. By Boogz N Tapes]
Take My Life (Feat. Andrea Martin) [Prod. By Jake-One]
Millions (Feat. Rick Ross) [Prod. By Southside, Co-Prod. By Kanye West]

K. Roosevelt- RoseGold (Free-P)

Kueezy brought this to my attention, I've been playing this heaps over the past couple weeks. Really big fan. Turns out I'd heard him already though on Game's album- It's cool when you discover an artist already exists in your library on other artist's tracks. K. Roosevelt is apart of Hit-Boy's (producer of Niggas In Paris) label HS87, who are dropping some formidable production. Hit-Boy's rapping may need a bit of work.. but Audio Push and K. Roosevelt have made a solid mark in the current underground/niche market.

This EP is effortless listening, good for any occasion- no complex tripped out beats or incomprehensible conscious lyrics- just solid RnB. A little Omarion-like. Mibbs from Pac-Div and Hit-Boy make appearances.

DYNU Top of 2012 Set- PART ONE

So, at the end of last year I spent a few hours sifting through my entire library, attempting to create a shortlist for a feature here at DYNU. Also, I was attempting to imagine my Triple J 'Hottest 100' Top 10 from the bunch of tracks. I almost could't find 10 tracks out of my 120-odd in Triple J's actual shortlist... so I decided to do my own culmination of the best hiphop 2012 had to offer. It was a monstrous year in terms of top notch releases.

This set is no showcase of mixing talent.. there are no fancy transitions, no fancy effects. The emphasis is on music taste, hoping that listeners pick up on some new tracks/artists they overlooked last year, or never even knew existed previously! So enjoy a solid hour of the best beats we spent the entire year jamming to... especially the last track...

PART TWO coming soon..

PS ...there has been a delay on this due to finding a site that would upload the entire set without copyright cutting us off at the knees...

A$AP ROCKY- LONGLIVEA$AP (Album Feature)

We've been fucking with Rocky for a while.

Fall back to 2011, before LiveLoveA$AP dropped. Here was this tripped out druggy Harlem cat with french braids and some random blonde chick with grills on the Purple Swag video... I didn't feel it at all, thought it was amateur as hell. Thankfully I watched the vid all the way through and heard the chopped-and-screwed, unreleased-at-the-time version of Peso at the end. Never heard anything like it. I was immediately intrigued. Purple Swag- I hated. Stupid. But this other track.... fuck. What was it?

LongLiveA$AP dropped, and I listened subconsciously one afternoon doing other shit, paying no attention to lyrics- just these contagious sounds, and screwed-up, purple-laced deep ad-libs... Three or four plays through and I'm spending hours on complex.com researching this cat. I'd seen all the interviews, read all the write-ups. This A$AP shit was a breath of fresh air, game changing stuff. Bringing back that Bone-Thugs/UGK/Southern Experimental Trill SHIT.

I rarely listen to an album from top to bottom more than 2/3 times. You move on, it's just like a movie I guess. It's time consuming. For me, Long Live A$AP plays would be in the 40/50s. So now you understand how excited I have been for this release.

A$AP Rocky signed a 3-MILLION DOLLAR record deal off ONE MIXTAPE (excluding that one almost non-exhistant-to-general-public free-p 'Deep Purple'). One mixtape. It's unheard of, I still struggle to get my head around how 16 tracks can explode into such stardom so quickly. I guess it just shows how music, hip hop in particular, is a very social industry thanks to countless blogs/twitter/radio talkshows in the US.

So... Upon first listens, NO it's not as swaggy as LiveLoveA$AP, but you can hear his progression. A very professional record, and apart from maybe two tracks (Florence Welch song is lame as fuck) he stuck very heavily to his roots. Which is so important when rappers make the mixtape-album transition.
There are so, so, so many features. But he did it in a way that didn't jeopardise his opportunity to further prove his solo artistry, there's still 9 Rocky-only tracks.

My favourite moment in this album ironically isn't A$AP though... It's when Danny Brown comes in on '1Train'... that shit just fits perfect, he attacks that Hit-Boy beat with his usual quirky steeze.

Anyway, I am just so, so stoked and relieved that we've gotten to hear LEGIT A$AP music, not some major label bullshit. He was able to keep creative control. I still want more though!!!

On a side note... Sadly, all the general public will most likely only hear in Australia will be the Skrillex track and the Florence Welch song... #Clamsbeatsforradio
